Kellie Eason RN, RM, IBCLCKellie is a Nurse, Midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in private practice, with over 25 years experience. It takes a team to be able to successfully breastfeed & support strong & healthy families!
It concerns me as a health professional at how unacceptably low our global breastfeeding rates are. WHO and UNICEF recommend: 1. Early initiation of breastfeeding within 1 hour of birth; 2. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life; & 3. Introduction of nutritionally-adequate & safe complementary (solid) foods at 6 months together with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond. Optimal breastfeeding is so critical that it could save the lives of over 820 000 children under the age of 5 years each year.
These facts cannot be ignored and this post IS NOT aimed against families who are unable to breastfeed... For the health and wellbeing of our children, as parents, we all have a responsibility to be informed. Please take notice of these statistics & reach out & get or give the help that is needed to help families be able to successfully breastfeed. We need to help our children commence life with a better start than we are already doing. A FEW EXTRA FACTS
SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU BE A SUCCESSFUL BREASTFEEDER
Think about it this way, during the Sydney 2000 Olympics, if Cathy Freeman didn't train before she won gold, she may have quit well before she started. Cathy Freeman had to focus on achieving gold in order for success, & this meant having a team behind her to keep her focused. When Cathy Freeman was training & racing, she was in a heap of pain & no-one from the sidelines told her to give up...EVER! They cheered her on to keep on going...and she won GOLD....
