Tongue & Lip Tie Diagnosis can at times be straightforward, but most of the time, it can be quite complex.

However if these issues are occurring, we have strong evidence advising us of the benefits of having the procedure performed.
Diagnosing tongue & lip ties requires expert assessment as it is a sub speciality within our health care profession.
That is, basic Medical, Paediatric, Nursing, Midwifery & Lactation Consultant education does not cover tongue & lip tie assessments in depth.
What is involved in assessing a baby with tongue & Lip Ties
A feeding & physical assessment of your baby looking at his/her:
For infants under the age of six months, the assessor will need to know how to correlate these assessments with a specialised HATLFF tool (Hazelbaker Assessment of Tongue & Lingual Frenulum Function Tool)
So as you can see, tongue tie assessment is quite complex & only skilled health care professionals are capable of providing an accurate diagnosis.
Questions to ask your health care provider:
1. Do you perform a HATLFF (pronounced "Hatliff")
2. Do you know about the impact of tongue ties on feeding as well as my baby's health in the long term?
3. What are my options, if I don't want my baby to have a frenectomy?
